Why Dictation Works

Dictation is hard — but it’s the right kind of hard.

From Vague Comprehension to Precise Perception

Dictation forces close listening to syllable boundaries, connected speech, stress, and tonal variation. You stop guessing overall meaning and start training real auditory parsing.

From Input to Output, and Into Long-Term Memory

Multiple-choice practice relies on recognition. Dictation requires recall and production. If you can write it, you have truly heard and retained it.

Memory Interval Is Half the Learning Process

The core of dictation is memory processing across listening, retention, and writing, which constitutes half the learning process.

Frequently asked questions

What is MandarinEar?

MandarinEar is a Mandarin Chinese listening practice platform for learners at different levels. Practice with real Mandarin audio, Listen & Choose or Listen & Type, and instant feedback to build your listening skills for HSK and everyday conversations.

How can I practice listening?

There are two ways to practice. With Listen & Choose, listen and answer true-or-false or multiple-choice questions to check your understanding. With Listen & Type, listen one segment at a time and type the Chinese you hear to identify missed or misheard details. You can use either mode independently.

Is Listen & Choose suitable for HSK listening preparation?

Yes. Listen & Choose uses true-or-false and multiple-choice formats commonly found in HSK listening, helping you practice identifying key information and choosing an answer. Choose content that matches your current level for regular listening practice alongside your HSK preparation.

Should I use Listen & Choose or Listen & Type?

Start with Listen & Choose to practice understanding the message and picking out key information, including for HSK preparation. Use Listen & Type when you understand the gist but miss the exact words. Alternate between them to work on both comprehension and detail.

How is this different from just listening to Chinese podcasts?

Podcasts expose you to more Chinese and help you get used to its pace and expressions. MandarinEar also checks what you understood: choose an answer or type what you heard, then use feedback to find what needs more practice.
